What to do this Weekend in Columbus

Friday, August 10th, 2007

This weekend in and around Columbus you could:

ballet.jpg

Take in the last practices and performances at Ballet Met, where the 30×30 event showcases the artistic process of creating a ballet from start to finish. You can watch open rehearsals at midday, then take in the final product in the evening.
BalletMet: 30×30: The Showcases
BalletMet Performance Space
322 Mount Vernon Ave., Columbus

See a classic at the Ohio Theater~

12_men.jpg

Friday, the CAPA summer movie series is offering 12 Angry Men. Considered one of Henry Fonda’s best, this dark tale centers on a murder trial and the 12 men who hold the accused’s life in their hands.

On the lighter side, Saturday and Sunday bring Tootsie. Dustin Hoffman stars in this tale of an out of work actor who becomes daytime drama’s most popular leading lady.

For a classic of a different kind, head east to the MOPAR Nationals being held at National Trail Raceway. MOPAR is a great event for Columbus. If you happen to be visiting the Brice Rd. area and can’t seem to figure out why people are lined up like the 4th. of July parade is about to begin, it’s because Brice Rd. is where Chrysler Co. auto owners and fans make their annual pilgrimage. If you like Chrysler products, stick around. You are likely to see a Super Bee, Barracuda and a half dozen General Lee replicas.

Beat the Heat: Beaches of Central Ohio

Thursday, August 9th, 2007

With temperatures reaching record highs I want to encourage anyone with sick or elderly relatives or neighbors to please check on them frequently over the next few weeks. Thank you.

Today, lets discuss where you can get to a sandy beach and enjoy some time just relaxing. The summer is nearly over for the kids and the heat is pounding, so try to get out and enjoy a day at the beach while you still have time.

REMEMBER YOUR SUNBLOCK AND DRINKING WATER

Alum Creek State Park
3615 S. Old State Road Delaware, OH 43015 (740) 548-4631
The closest to Columbus. Nice stretch of beach. Well patrolled. Very busy.

Madison Lake State Park
20635 Waterloo Road Mt. Sterling, Ohio 43143-9501 (740) 869-3124
This park has a small stretch of beach for swimmers and sunbathers. Not as busy.

Deer Creek State Park
20635 Waterloo Road Mt. Sterling, OH 43143 (740) 869-3124
Nice large beach. Lots of amenities. Worth the drive. Busy–get there early.

Buckeye Lake State Park
2905 Liebs Island Road Millersport, OH 43046 (740) 467-2690
Another small beach. Great community. Fairly busy.
(Personal Note: In my book, this is the most improved beach/lake in the central Ohio area. As a child my parents would drive 40 minutes to another beach to avoid this one because the lake was so dirty you could literally smell it from the freeway. The major campaign to clean up Buckeye Lake has been very successful and it is now a great place to be with your friends and family.)

These beaches are all in state parks and along the edges of lakes or reservoirs. While a major campaign has cleaned the waters of Ohio up quite a bit since the late 1970s, you should still take a shower and drink plenty of fresh water after a day at the beach.

Where to Stay in Columbus: Hotels at the Airport

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

This is not really a review, but simply some information on where you can stay if you are stuck at or need to be near the airport. All of these hotels are clean, safe places to get a good night’s sleep. Most of these hotels also have a day rate if you are stuck for several hours and just need to grab a nap.

Of the available hotels at the airport, the nicest is the Concourse. They also have a nice spa/fitness club, which you can use for $10.

Concourse Hotel and Conference Center
(614) 237-2515

The second nicest is the Hilton Garden Inn. They maintain the rigid standards set by the Hilton Corporation.

Hilton Garden Inn
(614) 231-2869

Any of the other three hotels on airport property would be acceptable as well. They are:

Comfort Suites
(614) 237-5847

Cross Country Inn
(800) 621-1429

Hampton Inn
(614) 235-0717

By pairing with the Cartoon Network, COSI has brought an element of familiarity and excitement to this already intriguing exhibit.

Visitors can play with numerous methods of creating animation, right up to stepping onto a stage and becoming your own animated character.

There is also a “museum” of animation, which takes a look at the early successes of this entertainment medium.

Animation featuring the Cartoon Network is on display through Sept. 3.

COSI is open 10-5 daily through Sept. 3. (closes at 9 on the last Friday of the month.)
Open on holiday Mondays including Labor Day.

Road Trip: The Longaberger Basket Co.

Monday, August 6th, 2007

Visitors to central Ohio who are fans of the Longaberger basket should schedule a day or two to head east and check out all the fun that the Longaberger Basket Company has to offer. This is my suggested itinerary.

basket.jpg

First, take St. Rt. 16 (Broad St.) east out of Columbus and head to the far east side of Newark, where you will find the amazing building that is the national headquarters for the company. This seven story building is shaped like one of the company’s market baskets and is complete with three story handles and the “brass” ID plate that adorns the company’s flagship product.

Call 740-322-5588 or e-mail guestrelations@longaberger.com to schedule a tour.

Next, head out to Frazeysburg and experience the Longaberger Homestead. The way I like to describe Longaberger homestead is this–close your eyes and think of the feeling you get and the fun you have just walking into your favorite amusement park. That’s it. Now, don’t expect roller coasters, but for adults who like Longaberger it’s just as good. Enjoy the rest of the day shopping, eating at one of the many restaurants or enjoying one of their special events. You can even make your very own Longaberger basket with some guidance from seasoned basket weavers.

At the end of your first day, head back into Newark and spend the night at The Place Off the Square, Longaberger’s own hotel. I do not know much about this hotel other than it is one of Newark’s nicest, eclipsed only by Cherry Valley Lodge.

In the morning, head out for an early tee time at Longaberger Golf Club. “The par-72 course, designed by Arthur Hills, was named one of the “Top 100 You Can Play” by Golf Magazine and Golf Digest, and continues to receive rave reviews from golfers of all skill levels.”* Before leaving, have lunch at the Golf Club Restaurant.

Finally, head out to historic Dresden. This was the long time home of company founder Dave Longaberger. Here you’ll see the world’s largest picnic basket. Walk the quaint streets, do a little more shopping at the Patio Shops and Clothing Company and have dinner at Popeye’s**, which features hot, juicy burgers and old fashioned malts and milkshakes.

Shopping Then & Now in Columbus

Thursday, August 2nd, 2007

Before we start, someone will probably be offended I do not include the Continent in this post. But for me the Continent is such a special case it will get its own post sometime down the road.

Once upon a time in a Columbus long long ago, four ‘major’ malls and three amazing shopping centers ruled retail in the capitol city.

shoppers.jpg

The shopping centers, Southland, Northern Lights and Graceland still stand. All three are in areas of the city that desperately need rebuilding. They stand in the kind of areas that are not so far gone that a major rebuilding campaign, like the one taking place downtown could not help them. But more than the shopping centers need attention, the surrounding neighborhoods must improve as well. The positive thing about all three of these shopping centers is that the storefronts are actually for the most part full. There may be a lot of nail salons, check cashing services and places to buy hair extensions, but they are paying the bills. The lights are on, the parking lots are patrolled and the major anchor stores, which in the case of outdoor shopping centers tend to be grocery stores, are all still doing a good business.

The malls: Eastland, Westland, Southland and the once incredibly busy Northland were the kinds of places shoppers had only dreamed about before they were built. And through the 70s & 80s (and well into the 90s for all but Southland) they made money hand over fist.

northland.jpg
The empty storefront of Sears after Northland Mall finally closed in 2003

Let me mourn Northland for a moment. Gone, gone, gone. What was once the busiest mall in Columbus, is now an empty parking lot.

Southland has found a new use for itself. Gone are almost all of the stores. A huge flea market that inhabited what used to be the anchor store finally closed this past January. Last time I was there a bank and a solitary music store were the only retail still going. The movie theater is now used for storage. BUT, the mall is not standing empty and useless. Offices have moved in, the most prolific is ECOT (electronic classroom) which is slowly taking up more and more of the space.

Now for some useful information . . .

Westland is all but a dead mall. Over half the stores are empty and the Macys (Lazarus) is gone. But Sears still stands and a really good mexican restaurant fills what used to be the ChiChi’s. There are two fine jewelry retailers here, several of the more urban clothing stores and some specialty shops. One thing I can say on the positive side is that if you want to get good personal service, Westland is a great place to shop if the store you are looking for is still located there. Check the link for store listings.

Eastland however is thriving. The storefronts are for the most part full. People are there, even through the week and the anchor stores are all full. The one exception to this is an empty Macy’s, but that is only because Macy’s has built a new store here. The food court is full. One thing that saves Eastland is that the location is so far removed from the newer shopping centers of Tuttle, Easton & Polaris. The mall owner, Glimcher Co. has invested the money it takes to keep this mall in good shape. The parking lot is well lit and regularly patrolled by mall security. The OHIO State Fair

Wednesday, August 1st, 2007

Today marks the opening of the 154th. Ohio State Fair!

state_fair.gif

In my personal memory nothing holds the same place as my family’s annual trip to the fair. With a midway featuring more than 60 rides, agricultural and art displays, vendors from all over the country, concerts by top headliners and OH, the FOOD, the Ohio State Fair is one of the biggest and the best in the country.

My favorite things to visit include the Art building on the south end of the fairgrounds, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources displays, the Bricker Building with it’s many vendors, the Lauche Building which hosts the Scouts and other youth groups from across the state and I never go to the fair without taking a quiet walk through the stables to see blue ribbon horses from across the state.

The Ohio State Fair is located on the Ohio Expo Center grounds, right in the middle of the city. Take I 71 to 17th. St. and follow the signs.
